STEVEN CRIST AT WOODBINE ON SATURDAY

Ace handicapper, author and chairman and publisher of DAILY RACING FORM is at Woodbine on Saturday at 11-12 a.m. for a handicapping seminar and discussion of his book Bet With The Best 2- Longshots.

The seminar kicks off an exciting week at Woodbine when turf stars will be getting ready for the WOODBINE MILE on Sept. 20.

There is a Woodbine Mile trackside party, a seminar in the morning with Milke guests and tons of good racing.

But come out Saturday to get a copy of BET WITH THE BESTS and learn some handicapping techniques from STEVE CRIST.

BRIBON WORKS, ON HIS WAY

BRIBON won a turf allowance on Aug. 9 at Sartoga with a 103 Beyer Figure. He has run 118 on dirt on the Beyer scale.

Born in France, the gelding, whose name means Rascal, is a favourite for the Woodbine Mile.

Grade 1 winner BRIBON (MARK OF ESTEEM), the possible favourite in the Woodbine Mike on Sept. 20, worked four furlongs in 49 1/5 on the Belmont training dirt yesterday and should be headed to Woodbine in the next few days.

A confirmed dirt runner who just won a turf allowance, BRIBON is one of perhaps 10 possible entries in the Mile, a Win and You’re Inevent for the Breeders’ Cup (Bribon is not Breeders’ Cup eligible).

Last year’s winner RAHY’S ATTORNEY heads a solid local group.

A field of 9 or 10 is predicted at this time.

Congratulations go to trainer ARTHUR SILVERA, who won his first race of the meeting yesterday with TAZ CAT in a  $25,000 maiden claiming event.

Silvera, whose father Laurie is recovering from a serious illness, is one of the track’s more popular and personable horsemen.

Taz Cat is a grey colt by High Yield owned vy Audrey Bowman and Jeff Moldofsky.

A double winner in the last 2 days is trainer PAUL ATTARD who has been cleaning with in recent weeks.

Yesterday, the filly CLEAR LAKE, owned by Thoroughblog friend ROB SMITHEN won an allowance race by almost 10 lengths in the finale, picking up the winner’s share of the $69,100 purse. An ONtario sired gal by MEGAS VUKEFALOS (at last check was breeding quarter horse mares up in King,Ontario), the Kbon HIll S5table bred 3yo was adding blinkers and losing the whip – jockey Rob Landry reportedly did not have a whip at the finish.

An impressive debut winner yesterday was the New York bred SAY IT RIGHT, a Soto filly (that sire is 28% with debut winners from starters) who romped in a 5 furlong maiden allowance for 3yo’s, She was a $16K yearling and is owned by Edenvale Stable.

On Wednesday night, the streaking BOGUE CHITTO (Crafty Prospector) won again, in his grass debut, and is heade to stakes race. Owned and bred by Luis de Heccharvia, the gelding’s 3rd win in succession is one of numerous success stories for trainer Ian Howard who is having a stunning season.

“He’s a nasty son of a gun,” said Howard on THE SCORE following the race.

The night’s first race was a very rough affair and resulted in a disqualification.

The turf sprint went to SAINTLY SOLUTION, trained by Vladamir Cerin but that was not the whole story.

After that one veered out badly at the start, rushed up and then was wrangled back, he had a clear trip after that while GOLD CASTLE just about went over the railing when TIERRA DEL TIGRE came in on him through the stretch.

Gold Castle finished well but the stretch run was crowded and confusing and there appeared to be a lot of hard-ridden horses too.

The impeccably bred BRICKYARD CROSSING won the “beauty contest and the race” according to jockey Corey Fraser, who rode yet another winner for the Mark Casse stable. The A.P. Indy winner was in a claiming race mind you,$16,000, but he led all the way over the slow surface and was gamein the stretch run.

There were some unhappy campers after race 7 when jockey JUSTI STEIN fell off Sincerely A to Z after that rival clipped heels into the stretch. Stein was not hurt and the horse looked okay too.

The winner of that race was LIFES NOT A BREEZE, who took forever to win his maiden but, as is often the case with horses that are longtime maidens, he came right back to score and he did it by 6 lengths in a very fast time of 1:44.43.

 Financial support from province needed to save Fort Erie Racetrack

The future of the Fort Erie Racetrack is still uncertain, but the agencies trying to save it are hoping a new proposal will be the solution for sustaining the 112-year-old border oval for at least five years.

Jim Thibert, EDTC general manager feels in order to sustain live horse racing at the Fort Erie Racetrack, the current funding model from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) needs to be restructured. Instead of track owners and horsemen each receiving 10 per cent of slots revenues, the Consortia’s new proposal indicates hopes of the provincial government contributing $15 million per year, with $6 million going toward race purses.
