Happy last day of Summer – rain on the way again, turf racing in Ontario in jeopardy through weekend…
In Memory of ALEZZANDRO – Canadian champion 3 year old of 2007, winner of $767, 919 including his last start, December 2010 at Woodbine. Recently donated to LongRun by Knob Hill Stable. but got ill. Extensive efforts to save the gelding were not successful.

“FROND” RUNNING STYLE WINS IT FOR FERN – 90 Beyer!
Big night for Gus Schickedanz and Mike Keogh
The featured Wednesday night event at Woodbine was not much of a race as it was a 4 horse field for the King Corrie stakes and it figured to be a walk in the park for champion HOLLYWOOD HIT, the sprinter of the year last year but, somewhat hard to figure on occasion.
Last night was one of those occasions.
Coming off a freshening, HOLLYWOOD HIT was 1 for 5 in the tiny field but he met his match on the pace with another fresh one, ARTIC FERN, who was pushed to the lead while in tight on the rail by jockey David Clark.
The big guy loved it as he hooked up with the champ and then edged away while the Hit-man lost 2nd late to Signature Red.
Artic Fern paid $15.90 – no place or show betting.
Mike Keogh had the Fern well prepared for his first outing in 3 months; He had won his season opener so impressively but obviously has had plenty of setbacks along the way.
Gus Schickedanz, owner and breeder of the Fern, led his big gelding into the winner’s circle.
The 4yo is by Langfuhr out of Wood Fern.
Sports Select, a stablemate of Hollywood Hit, was supplemented to the race and then scratched.
The Schickedanz and Keogh team were at it again in race 6 as SAY NO MORE won his first try arund 2 turns on Polytrack, leading all the way at 5 to 1. A promising sort, this son of Langfuhr had been wandering lately while trying turf and sprints but he was the boss of this optional claimer. MEDIDOCIHOSPISURG, winner of the recent Elgin Stakes, was 3rd.
Say No More’s 1:43 for 1 1/16 miles came over a very fast Polytrack and his Beyer was 84.
A NIGHT OF BAD STARTS
As you read last night’s recaps you will notice a theme – it was a bad night for for many horses who had awful starts.
The worst one came in race 6 when NITA MARU, one of the favourites, acted up in the gate and then reared at the break. The head on reply does not tell us much, it is so far away you can’t see whether the filly got a fair start or not. She somehow rallied for 2nd despite the dreadful beginning.
Race 1 – Trainer Sammy D (DiPasquale) won 19 races at Woodbine in 2009, 21 last year and he is up to 18 this season as of the 1st race on Wed. night.
The 6yo mare GALLOPING D’AMOUR was the easy pick in the race for $16K claiming and she is owned by James Redekop.
Race 3 – UNCOUPLED ENTRY ALERT!! A Pair of Mark Casse trained beginners went in race 3 for $20K claiming and the 2 to 1 fave was his more fancied one, STONEWALLING, by Excluisve Quality with Patrick Husbands up. The fellow zoomed up the 2 path on the turn to battled for the lead but the other Casse runner, BET ON JACK, by With Distinction, came up the rail later and put away this corner’s pick, SLEWMOBIL to win at ..
The winner is a homebred for Gilbert Campbell and the dam of this winner did have a 2yo debut winner from 2 foals to race. Quincy Welch rode the winner.
In that baby race there was a bunch of messy starts – the 1, 2 and 7 all broke slowly and 1 – WESSIE THE CAT had a nice late run.
RACE 4 – WANADAY won her maiden for $16,000 for Dave Cotey and breeder Dave Hagar – she had been 3rd in 4 of her 8 previous races. She rallied to beat Lantana Lady while Silver Hoofbeats, who absolutely dwelt at the start, rallied fast for 3rd. Matt Moore’s 7th win of the Woodbine meeting.
PRAYINGALLTHEWAY won the 6th race for Michael Goubault. The Nancy Mitchell-bred filly is by Compadre and she beat a very unlucky Nita Maru for her maiden score for $25,000. Mark Casse trains.
race 7 – Trainer Terry Jordan may have lost the stake but CLOSING SCENE won for him and owner Canvasback Farms in a $12,500 event. The Vying Victor filly led all the way.
race 8 – CITIUS was extremely impressive in his win in the Ontario sired allowance co-feature. This son of Old Forester broke a bit slowly and then made a fast move around the turn on his way to running down Gangster Rap for the win. The Ralph Biamonte bred is owned by Biamonte and Danny Lococo.

PENDER IS HERE, OR IS HE THERE??
Two very big races at Woodbine this weekend – the ONTARIO DERBY on Saturday could pit MOONSHINE MULLIN/PNDER HARBOUR and BOWMAN’S CAUSEWAY in a battle for 3yo male champ. PENDER HARBOUR may, however, go to Pennsylvania for the Penn Derby instead..stay tuned.
ON Sunday, INGLORIOUS could be in the SELENE STAKES – she is the top 3yo filly in canada and in the hunt for HORSE OF THE YEAR too along with the boys and NEVER RETREAT, who is a very tough customer for a Sovereign Award this year too…

SQUARE EDDIE..HEADED TO GRADED STAKES
This morning on the racing site THOROUGHBRED CHAMPIONS, the lead off forum topic was about Square Eddie and his recent return from his 2nd retirement…he’s in the news again today:
(Thoroughbred Times_
by Frank Angst
After returning from a second retirement earlier this year, J. Paul Reddam’s Square Eddie is being considered for a start in the Ancient Title Stakes (G1) on October 8 at Santa Anita Park.
Square Eddie, who won the 2008 Lane’s End Breeders’ Futurity (G1) at Keeneland Race Course, won in his return to racing this year, taking an allowance race on January 14 at Santa Anita. Since that effort he has finished off the board in three stakes races, a pair of Grade 1 tests followed by the Pirate’s Bounty Stakes on September 7 at Del Mar.
The five-year-old Smart Strike horse seems to have an affinity for Santa Anita, where he worked three furlongs in :35.60 on September 18.
“It’s exactly what we wanted from him,” trainer Doug O’Neill said.
