OH WHAT A NIGHT
(..late September, back in 2011…)
A packed house laughed and danced the night away all for the love of the horse last evening at Woodbine where the LONGRUN THOROUGHBRED RETIREMENT GALA took place.
When you arrived, you were greeted by immaculate decor, black and silver, with crystal ball – type table settings surrounded by small pools of flowers. A giant, homemade collage of all the great Canadian horses was on display as was dozens of cool items up for auction.
It was a raucous and fun crowd that sat down to a multi course dinner, orchestrated by Chef Josef at Woodbine and the track’s staff were hard at work all night.
During dinner, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Stronach were presented with the VOLTERRA AWARD for their continued work for the retired racehorse. Mrs. Freida Stronach and Mike Rogers both had gracious speeches.
The ‘live auction’ originally was carded with 5 items until owner Bill Graham put up another package for 12 people at the Air Canada Centre to see a leafs/Ottawa NHL game. Graham had already donated a box for 12 to a Toronto Raptors game.
The hockey game went for $8,000 and the NBA game went for $3,000.
The big seller of the night was an original oil of Northern Dancer by Myfanway MacDonald that sold for $10,000 to Gus Schickedanz.
Yours truly got her own special piece of artwork that will proudly hang in my little house!
The entertainment, by Hollywood Heaven, was outstanding., Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga impersonators with dancers and a band were incredible and the dance floor was packed virtually up until 1 a.m.
The Legends Gala was no doubt a huge undertaking again for the board of directors of LongRun, hundreds of hours collecting, calling and inviting everyone to join them in the continued quest to make sure every one of our racehorses has a happy and healthy life after racing.
Look who just arrived into the LongRun program! MENSCH, a winner for Renee Kierans says thank you for looking after all the horses who run their hearts out for us.Mensch is only recently retired and he is already set to start a new career.
MARK CASSE WATCH
Strength in numbers today – Mark Casse has a few chances to set the record for most wins in a season by a trainer.
Race 2’s starter, OUR TRUE GAL, is a maiden filly getting a couple of double-moves – turn back and drop.
And if the 5th race is off turf (likely) – how about CHEERFUL HEART drawing in? This one looks like a potential star – you can see her workout from the 2yo sale in Ocala on the Ocala sales website.

Years ago, the nominations to this race were announced at a cool luncheon/press conference. It’s a lot different in the game these days, the number of noms is way down from years ago but that’s in part due to supplement rules.WORKFORCE, last year’s Arc winner, is nominated but he is going in the Arc tomorrow.
