BOB ANDERSON

PHOTO OF BOB, AT RIGHT, BY DAVE LANDRY

The family will receive friends for visitation on Sunday, November 14, 2010 at the Sifton Funeral Home from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm, 118 Wellington St, St. Thomas, ON.  Funeral Services will be held Monday, November 15, 2010 at 11 am at Knox Presbyterian Church, 55 Hincks St., St. Thomas, ON.  Reception to follow at Redtail Golf Course, 7020 Mill Rd, Port Stanley, ON.  Donations in Bob’s memory can be made to The Canadian Diabetes Association, diabetes.ca or in the USA at diabetes.org.

It was stunning to hear the news last Wednesday night when everyone was enjoying one of the last Wednesday nights of racing at Woodbine.

news had come down that personable, smiling Bob Anderson, lean and trim these days, had suffered a heart attack while getting ready to leave Florida. He had been on a cruise and was heading to, where else, Kentucky for racing and sales – his passion.

The community had hoped that Bob would recover, that we would get the news in a few days that he was stable and getting better. But on Sunday afternoon, the news was not good.

“It is with profound sadness and sense of loss that I inform you of the passing of Robert (Bob) M. Anderson, on Sunday,

November 7, 2010,” advised David S. Willmot, Chair of Woodbine Entertainment Group. “Bob succumbed to the effects of a serious heart attack suffered last Wednesday.”

He was 64.

Tuesday, the Anderson sales team had horses entered in the Keeneland November sale, including his stakes winner NORTHERN KRAZE who sold for $80,000. All of the horses entered  by Willmot, his good friend who sells through his farm, were withdrawn.

I remember Bob as someone who could always be easily located to do an interview. Whether it was about horses that he brought to Ontario, bred or had a lot to do with the breeding –  like Alydeed, Ascot Knight, Pennyhill Park, Pinafore Park and more recently Street Sounds – Bob was always available to chat. And then we he would always ask, “so how are you doing, what are you up to”. He was gracious and funny and sharp as a tack.

Anderson has been involved with breeding, racing and selling thoroughbred and standardbred race horses for 41 years in Canada, Europe and the United States.

He had been a Director of Woodbine Entertainment Group (formerly the Ontario Jockey Club) since 1984, Chairman of WEG’s Thoroughbred Racing Committee and Chairman of the Avelino Gomez Memorial Foundation.

In addition, he was past Ontario President of the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (CTHS), National President of the CTHS, member of the Board of Directors of the Hambletonian Society (Standardbred); Board member of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (USA), Steward of the Jockey Club of Canada, Member of the Ontario Racing Commission Advisory Board, First Chairman of the Guelph Centre for Equine Research and Member of the E.P. Taylor Equine Research Fund.

He was also involved in his hometown community of St. Thomas, Ontario.

He was past Vice-President of the St. Thomas Chamber of Commerce, co-founder of the downtown St. Thomas Development Board and past president of numerous charity organizations.

“His passion for the sport of horseracing radiated from his soul and he was such a good friend to so many of us. Our thoughts are with David, Jessica and their families as they deal with this loss which has come far too early,” offered Mr. Willmot.

CONTINUING SAGA OF APALACHIAN CHIEF

The follow-up release regarding complaints that a horse was living in a garage

(and that horse is multiple stakes winner Apalachian Chief)

APALACHIAN CHIEF, previously owned and bred by Bill Sorokolit, has been  a topic of conversation on forums and in the horse community for most of this year. Here is a recent ruling for the horse:

NEWMARKET, ON (November 3, 2010) – In April 2010, the Ontario SPCA received a call of concern for the horse with regards to the animal not receiving the proper standards of care as outlined in the Ontario SPCA Act. Since that time, Ontario SPCA officers have visited the animal many times on a regular basis. Orders have been issued and the owner has complied with the orders.

Many concerned citizens have asked why the animal has not been removed from its owner. Under the authority of the Ontario SPCA Act section 14.(1) the only grounds to remove an animal are under the following circumstances:

   1. A veterinarian has examined the animal and has advised the inspector in writing, that the animal’s health and well being necessitates its removal – the animal has been examined by two veterinarians (one being an equine specialist veterinarian) and neither vet has stated his care required his removal. One veterinarian examined the animal last week and stated that “Appalachian Chief” was “found to be in good health”.

   2. An inspector or agent has inspected the animal and has reasonable grounds for believing the animal is in immediate distress and the owner can’t be found – The Ontario SPCA has made frequent unscheduled visits to the horse and has never found the animal in immediate distress.

   3. An Order regarding the animal has been issued to the owner and has not been complied with – The Ontario SPCA has issued orders to the owner to ensure that the horse receives the standards of care outlined under the Ontario SPCA Act. The owner has complied with these orders.

There are other regulatory bodies with the ability to respond at different levels. Vaughan Animal Control, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) and the Ontario Racing Commission have all been made aware of the concerns expressed by the public.

The Ontario SPCA will continue to ensure that the standards of care are met and that Chief is not in distress

RACING POST REPORT – AVE GETS RIDER IN JAPAN

Castellano to ride Ave in Commemorative Cup

 By Jon Lees 10:11AM 10 NOV 2010

Japan: Javier Castellano, who was given a six-day ban for the riding incident that preceded his brawl with fellow jockey Calvin Borel at the Breeders’ Cup, has succeeded in having the suspension delayed so that he can ride Canadian challenger Ave  (trained by Roger Attfield) against dual Oaks winner Snow Fairy in Sunday’s Queen Elizabeth Commemorative Cup at Kyoto.

An appeal by the rider against the sentence, for causing the interference that nearly unseated Martin Garcia during Friday’s Marathon, had been denied by Kentucky officials, who are believed to be trying to put a stop to frivolous appeals, but a circuit court judge has granted a temporary injunction

FLYIN, THE BIRD IS RETIRED

Blood Horse report

Mine That Bird, who stunned the racing world when he won the 2009 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) at 50-1 odds, has been retired.

“They told me they were going to pick him up and take him home,” trainer D. Wayne Lukas said of owners Dr. Leonard Blach and Mark Allen. “He is just not mentally into it.”

Lukas said Mine That Bird will be sent to Blach’s Buena Surte Ranch in Roswell, N.M.

Lukas said the decision was made Nov. 7, one day after Mine That Bird finished 10th in the 12-horse field in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (gr. I).

“We talked it over quite thoroughly before the race,” Lukas said. “His weight was excellent and he was still physically sound. He was just going through the motions. I am really disappointed about the Mile. Before the race, I really thought we were going to win it but he didn’t get the trip and the winner (Dakota Phone) ran a great race.”
