FRIDAY – Another windy day at Woodbine,  leading rider battle

There is often a trend in the last month of racing as longtime maidens can pop up and win and stables that have had slow seasons or not a lot of wins can strike with frequency.

Lorne Richards and owner True North won the first race on Friday, 24 hours after winning the first race on Thursday for the 6th and 7th wins of the season. ROCCO POINT, a son of Bold Executive bred by Hope Stock Farm, won a thrilling fight to the finish to take the 5 furlong maiden allowance for 3yos and up. The winner was ridden by Gerry Olguin.

race 2 – BOLDNPOSSIBLE was super brave in the stretch run to fight off Ponage and win this maiden allowance for Ontario sired fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles for Joe Shiewtiz and Denyse McClachrie. The winner was wellbet in her first 2 starts and she is by Valid n Bold from Raw Possibility by Not Impossible. Gayle Bosscher and Shiewitz bred this nice filly and Justin Stein rode.

RADIANT STAR hung on to win this $8,000 claiming race for fillies and mares but certainly A MANS DRINK should have won but she got out of traffic too late and missed by a jump. The winner is owned by Mike Mailhot and Mark Hughes and she is by Strut the Stage. Dan Vell, her 3rd trainer in a year, was the winning conditioner.

Race 4 started the Pick 4 and ETHANOL  battled for the win for Joey Gee Thoroughbreds and trainer Pat Parente. The winner is 2 for 6 this year and was making his first start since August.  The 3yo gelding Uncorked Spirit ran a miraculous race after stumbling to his nose at the start.

race 5 – CAVALLETTA is in the midst of a career season and she won for the 3rd time this year in her 13th race in this $62,50 claiming race. The 6yo mare is currently in the barn of Kevin Attard who owns with Soli Mehta. Luis Contreras rode the winner, taking over from rival Da Silva who rode Crystal Duck.

race 6 – Number 2 for the Pat Parnete barn/Joey Gee Thoroughbreds as SWEET LTTLE MAN, know as a winless type for some time, has now won 2 sprints in his last 4 races. Sheena Ryan rode him in this $20,00 claiming race.

race 7 – CRACK THAT WHIP is a super Ontario-bred who cost $2,500 at the Fasig Tipton October sale in 2013. She did not race until this summer as a 3yo but has a record of 2-3-2 in 7 races and earnings of  over $75,000 thanks to this allowance win. Darcy Scudero owns and Mike McDonald trains. Gary Boulanger rode.

race 8  – MOON RAINBOW led all the way as the favourite to win this allowance/optional claiming race. The fancy Smart Strike filly was 2nd in the Carotene Stakes last time and she is 3 for 5 in her career for Sam-Son Farms,

race 9 – First time starter, slow start, 5 furlongs? No problem for a beginner from the sizzling KEVIN ATTARD barn as PERFECT SPEED was up in time to win this $8,000 claiming event for Martinwoods Farm  which bred the daughter of Showing Up.

Attard is now 5 wins in front for 2nd place in the leading trainer standings with 45 victories.
*THURSDAY – EXTREME WINDS made it tough for any horse on the day but in particular, horses coming from off the pace.
DAWNMINO, an Alberta bred first timer for Keith Johns’ True North Stable won her debut in race 1 on Thursday. The filly by U S ranger from the Katahaula County mare Dawn of Fame, tracked speed Another Badge and then took over into the stretch run.
Gerry Olguin rode and Lorne Richards trains. The time was 1:11.28.
In that race, a gate malfunction caused the refund of the 7-5 favourite Sweet Beatrice.

DAN AND RED, if you stuck with him this year, is now on a roll with 2 wins in his last 3 races. The 3yo by Munnings looked like he was ready to win at any given time most of the summer but it was not until he dropped to $25,000 claiming 2 starts ago that he got it done. He was back at that level this time for Sam DiPasquale who owns and trains and tallied for his 3rd win, all at 7 furlongs.
SIMON’S SIESTA won his maiden in race 3 for Karen Schmidt and Dennis Morrison who bred the son of Survivalist. Trained by Steve Attard, the gelding was one of 4 winners for Eurico da Silva on the day.
Da Silva opened up a 10 win lead on Contreras with those scores.

THEFORGOTTENONE came from just off the pace in this $8,000 claiming race to win at 9-2 for Greenoaks Farm and Angus Buntain, the stable’s 3rd win of the year. Sheena Ryan allowed her son of Marchfierld to move early with some others and while the gelding raced erratically down the strtech, he got the win. He had been last for $8,000 claiming on Oct. 2 and last in his latest for allowance but turned things around here.

COURAGEOUS MR J, a Saffir 2yo out of Courgeous Valor by My Boy Adam won his maiden in this 6 1/2 furlong dash for $20,00 claiming, The dark day is yet another 2yo winner this year for Ralph Biamonte and this one was a $4,133 (US) purchase by C E C Farms.

But wait there was more Biamonte babies to come – GINGER CANDY, bred by David James and co-owned by James, won the 6th race, a maiden allowance for 2yo fillies at 5 furlongs. The beginner is by Old Forester and was co-bred by Dr Tay james. Mary Biamonte is listed as owner. Omar Moreno rode.

Remarkable how hot HOT KISS is now after doing little through June. Now the daughter of Philanthropist is 3 for her last 5 and has 2 allowance wins in succession. Eurico da Silva with win no. 3. Super Six Stable owns and Denny Andrews trains.

BEARS REFLECTION, in for just $8,000, was worth every cent of that price and then some and at 1-5, won easily for Bear Stables and trainer Reade Baker. The good looking filly is 3 for 8 in her career and was a maiden allowance winner last year.
By First Samurai, she was claimed by Janice Attard.
