CTHS ONTARIO SALE – SESSION 1
Average and median suffer big drops
Topped by a chestnut colt by former Ontario stud Philanthropist that brought $70,000, the first session of the Woodbine yearling sale got off to a rocky (not unexpected start) on Monday night.
Despite a pumped up, large crowd that was certainly in good spirits, the numbers did not hold from last year.
Just as in 2011, 48 yearling were listed as sold but the gross was $1,001,000, down from $1,322,000.
The average price fell to $20,854 from $27,542 last year while the median dropped to $18,000 from $23,000.
Topping the first select session was a colt by former Ontario sire Philanthropist from the mare Loup de Grace , by Explosive Red that sold for $70,000 to trainer Mike DePaulo for Danny Dion’s Bear Stables Ltd. The yearling, a full brother to stakes winner Grace Phil, was sold by Paradox Farms Inc.
Philanthropist, the sire of 2011 three-year-old champion Pender Harbour from his first crop, was recently sold by his syndicate, including Paradox, located in Caledon East, Ontario, to interests in South Africa.
The second highest price, and the top selling filly, was hip number 63 who was filly by Yes It’s true out of Quite a Knightmare, by Ascot Knight. The bay filly was bought by Jam Jar Stables of Ontario for $55,000 from Huntington Stud Farm, agent.
Four yearlings sold for $50,000 and they were: hip no, 17, a colt by Corinthian out of stakes placed Mahalo, by Gulch that Reade Baker, agent for Bear Stables Ltd. Bought from Richard Hogan, agent; hip no. 31, a colt from the first crop of Grade 3 stakes winner Giant Gizmo out of the stakes producing mare Muriel (by Bold Executive), sold by Paradox Farm Inc. to Greg de Gannes, as agent for Joe Stritzl; a colt by Kitten’s Joy out of Oh What a Feeling, by Dixieland Band that sold to Biltmore Racing Stable from the consignment of Ballycroy Training Centre and hip no. 51, a colt from the Paul Buttigieg consignment by Where’s the Ring out of Paul’s Girl, by Bianconi that went to John Mattine, agent for RCC Stables and partner.
The CTHS (Ontario) sale continues Sept. 4 at 1 p.m. With a selected session and then on Sept. 8 with a preferred session.
The fastest winner on Sales stakes day at Woodbine – DYNAMIC SKY!
STAKES GALORE FOR SALES GRADUATES
The racing action on Labour day Monday at Woodbine was hot (like the sticky, humid weather) and there were some nice efforts from locally bred horses.
Who was the fastest? That would be the 2yo colt DYNAMIC SKY, who led a parade of 3 Mark Casse trained, Ontario bred 2yos in the Simcoe Stakes. The winner was 6 to 1 and he beat the 1-1 choice HONOURABLE GUEST who was ahead of 4 to 1 STAR CONTENDER.
Dynamic Sky earned an 88 Beyer for 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:17.70 on a very slow track.
The winner was a $27,000 yearling last season and was bought by John Oxley, who also owns Star Contender. Arosa Farms bred bred the Sky Mesa- Murani, Distorted Humor colt.
WELLOILEDMACHINE ran an 86 in his front running score in the one mile Halton Stakes on the grass. The Mobil fellow, owned by Christine and Dennis Windsor posted an 86 Beyer. He was bred by John Kennedy.
CRYPTIC MESSAGE may not be the most beautiful thoroughbred you have ever seen but this 2yo filly is 4 for 4 after winning the Muskoka Stakes She is a Cryptgraph filly out of Abby O bred by Helen and Barry Irving. Her Beyer was 63.

THE FORCE WAS WITH HIM
Delaforce wins Puss N Boots
Fort Erie, September 3rd … After a thrilling three horse photo finish to the 2012 Puss n Boots Cup it was announced that Delaforce, under jockey Martin Ramirez was the winner by the slimmest of margins over Flip for the Coin and Fiji Boy.
51 years ago the horse Puss n Boots veered in during the running of a turf race and ended up making a splash into one of the infield lakes. It has become a tradition for the winning connections of this particular event to do the same. For Trainer Daryl Ezra and rider Martin Ramirez it was their first time taking the plunge.
Delaforce is a 7yo by Porto Foricos bred by Rick Pettifer and Ken Parsley.
Delaforce returned $14.30 to win, $7.00 to place and $4.40 to show. The final running time for the mile and a sixteenth distance on the turf was 1:44.2.
TU TOUGH – 84 BEYER FOR SEAWAY WINNER
TU ENDIE WEI won her 2nd stakes race of 2012 when she held off a persistent ROXY GAP to win the Grade 2 Seaway Stakes yesterday at Woodbine. The bay 3yo by Johar – Ms Cornstalk, owned and bred by Brereton Jones, has not been very lucky this year

In that race, the winner veered in late and interfered with Bear’s Gem who was 3rd but the claim of foul was disallowed.
The 2nd fastest race of the day was BEAR’S FUTURE, Winning a $10k claiming race with an 80 beyer. iT was a miraculous win as the greay gelding broke horribly, trailed, rallied wide under a drive and was up to win for the bear stables. it was emma-jayne wilson’s 995th career win. the winner was claimed by stacey van camp.
PECHE MOBILEE (Mobil – Ma Peche) is a homebred for Dr. Judy Pottins and the Short Stop Stable. This gal won an allowance race, the 7th event, for ONtario sired gals under a shrewd ride by Quincey Welch. Peche Mobilee has a half sibling in the sale tomorrow.

STAR/NATIONAL POST WRITE STORY OF 13,000 DEAD HORSES
The same story about the possible death of many unwanted racehorses appeared in both the TORONTO STAR and NATIONAL POST last week. The comment section from the Star piece shows that there is not much sympathy of our industry out there form the public, that’s a bit worrisome.
Perhaps another reason why the sport of racing really needs to promote, dare I say, market, the horses, the personalities of the horses, in order to get the public to fall in love with horse racing. It’s historical, it’s beautiful, it’s magical.
The public needs to be swayed too.

GREY MATTER
CNN’s cool feature on grey horses and the all-grey horse race in England
Would love to see an all grey race at Woodbine!
“Fans gravitate to gray horses because they are rare and it’s easy to spot them,” – Brian Zipse.
