QUEEN’SPLATEKITTEN SOLD, TRAINED BY TODD PLETCHER
Canadian-bred QUEEN’SPLATEKITTEN, a 3-year-old Queen’s Plate contender (could you guess by his name) may perhaps be headed to the Kentucky Derby trail instead as he was recently sold by owners and breeders Ken and Sarah Ramsey for a hefty sum to Nicholas and James Brady’s Mill House LLC Stables.
Nicholas Brady is the former Secretary of the Treasury for the U.S. and last year raced the good 3yo Trappe Shot.Steven Young is the agent for the Brady family.
TODD PLETCHER is his new trainer.
Queen’splatekitten (Kitten’s Joy – Iteration, by Wild Again) was a winner at Woodbine last year in two starts and his maiden win around two turns left some thinking he was a serious factor for the local 3yo events this year.
The dark bay colt was previously trained by Brian Lynch.
Queen’splatekitten has worked twice on the Palm Meadows grass this winter.
BARBADOS GOLD CUP NOMINATIONS

Canadian representatives SAFETY ZONE and STEWARD HILL are among thee 22 horses nominated for this year’s Sandy Lane Gold Cup, a $200,000 race on the grass that is the biggest event in the Caribbean.
SAFETY ZONE and STEWARD HILL are owned by Eugene Melnyk, who won the race last year with his homebred STERWINS. While Sterins caanot make the race this year, the one he just got up to beat, BRIBON, a Met Mile winner, is also nominated, however he has not worked since he raced in November.
Top Barbados runners such as AREYOUTALKINTOME, JOHN BRIAN and PURE TEMPTATION are back for more Gold Cup action and former Woodbine runner JUST CALL ME ROGER has also been nominated but he has not worked since November at Woodbine.
Intriguing nominees include DANCIN DAVID, owned by Sir David Seale. The son of Omega Code is a half brother to John Brian and debuted at Woodbine in 2009 for trainer Roger Attfield but the horse does not report a race since then.
DANCIN DAVID has been working regularly at Payson Park.(Equibase has mistaken his works and put them under Dancing David (Ire))
And two runners from ST. KITTS, west Indies, AL PORTADOR and BAD ACTION (a former American runner who won the 2009 Grade 3 Pegasus Stakes) are also nominated.
Racing at St. Kitts has been held at the new BEAUMONT PARK in recent months. BAD ACTION (Brahms) is unbeaten in St. Kitts.

BLACK N BEAUTY READIES FOR HOLY BULL

Ontario-bed Black n Beauty, a $2,500 yearling purchase owned by Zayat Stables, worked Sunday for the Holy Bull Stakes. The son of Devil His Due breezed an easy four furlongs in :49.15, good for the 30th fastest of 76 drills at the distance. “He started off nice and even and also finished up well,” said conditioner Dale Romans. The Ontario-bred broke his maiden two back sprinting under the Twin Spires and returned last time to annex an allowance event at the Holy Bull’s track and trip by 2 1/2 lengths Jan. 7.

One of the most interesting things about Black N Beauty is his price tag: $2,500. That=s 100 times less
than the $250,000 Zayat paid for Eskendereya. Zayat’s former racing manager, Sobhy Sonbol, can be credited with the buy. Sonbol was killing time during session 10 of the 2009 Keeneland September Sale when he spotted Black N Beauty from the Adena Springs draft.
Sonbol was at the sale spearheading the Zayat buying team.
“I was waiting to catch a flight back to New York, and I saw this colt when he came in the back ring,@
explained Sonbol. “Compared to the quality of horses selling that late in the sale, you couldn’t but immediately notice him. The pedigree was light at first glance, but he’s bred the same way Roses in May is bred–by
the same sire and out of the immediate female family He was a big, strong colt, but was very light on his
feet. He had a great disposition. You could just tell he had class, and the body and athleticism to go with it.@
Sonbol closed his catalogue and decided to make a go for the colt, whose second dam is a stakes-winning
half-sister to G1 Dubai World Cup winner Roses in May, an earner of over $5.4 million.
“By this time, Mr. Zayat was done buying, but I tried calling to tell him about him,” said Sonbol. “I was unable
to reach him, so I decided to just buy the colt for myself. I kept pacing back and forth as he was walking
in the back ring, trying to find something wrong with him. The only thing I picked up was his ankles looked a
bit immature to me–but not even close enough to turn me off the horse. I kept looking around for the competition, to try to see who else would be bidding on him.
Ironically, I kept on looking to see if Dale Romans was around, since he was the kind of horse that hits him
right between the eyes. I didn’t find anyone around. Indeed, there was almost no competition for the
horse, and Sonbol signed the ticket as Morning Bloodstock, a name under which he sometimes breeds.
AOf course, when I bought him for $2,500, I was both ecstatic and worried,” said Sonbol. AThe price just
didn’t make any sense. I thought I was either a genius, or terribly wrong.”
One could understand Sonbol=s concern. To put it into perspective, 256 horses sold for more money than
Black N Beauty during that session alone.
“I had initially bought the horse under Morning Bloodstock for myself, but I worked for Mr. Zayat at the
time, and the reason I was at Keeneland was to buy horses for him and not myself,@ Sonbol added. “I would
have been conflicted not to offer him the horse first. The minute I got a hold of him, I told him the story, and
I told him that I knew we were done buying, but that I bought the horse, and if he didn’t want him, I would
keep him.

TED BEARE
A dear friend of the WOODBINE PRESS BOX, TED BEARE passed away recently. I was lucky enough to meet and chat to Ted on big racing days at Woodbine and he was enthusiastic, bright and very friendly.
Brantford sportswriting legend Ted Beare died Tuesday Jan. 11 after suffering a stroke.
Beare’s wife, Piret, said funeral arrangements are being made today.
Beare, who celebrated his 82nd birthday Jan. 3, wrote a Beare Facts column Monday night that is being published in today’s edition of The Expositor.
He was employed by The Expositor for 42 years. He was sports editor from 1953 to 1992, when he retired.
“I’m just absolutely shell-shocked,” Ron Craig, who worked in the newsroom with Beare for 31 years, said.
Craig spent 10 years working in the sports department.
“He (Beare) had the common touch,” Craig said. “He always stressed to get both sides of the story and be fair and up front.

Ad drew soccer star to the city

An advertisement in a German newspaper, soliciting soccer players, led Reinhard Schubert to Brantford in 1968 and, for the next 10 years, he became a goal-scoring machine.
Nobody could direct a powerful shot into the net the way Schubert did as he led the crowd-pleasing Brantford Falcons year after year, culminating in an Ontario Cup championship in 1975.
