TWO DAY CTHS SELECT SALE COMPLETE
Scotts make rare purchase, pick up topper
William and Anne Scott raced champion 3y0 Le Cinquieme Essai almost 10 years ago and have been racing their homebreds here and there since then. This week the couple bought 2 yearlings at the CTHS Select sale in a rare move including the highest price youngster (Read more below).
The top buyers at the auction include BEAR STABLES, which bought the next 3 highest prices, MARK CASSE, agent, who bought one of the 2nd top prices tied with the Bear Stables, Alistair Roden, agent, Adena Springs, Linmac Farms, Denny Andrewws, etc.
The local money was there.
Tuesday’s 2 p.m. session was a lot more raucous than Monday night – the action was fast and furious and the session ended at a reasonable 7:30.
BLOOD-HORSE REPORT ON SALE:
A strong second select session at the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society’s yearling sale of Canadian-bred youngsters at Woodbine helped spur an 12.7% jump in average price from 2010.
The Ontario division of the CTHS had a new format for this year’s sale with an initial selected session on Labour Day, Sept. 5, of 70 horses, followed by a second selected session Tuesday, Sept. 6. In 2010, the selected session took place on just a single afternoon.
The experiment seemed to work as the two-day selected auction realized an increase in average yearling price to Can$32,456, up from Can$28,802 a year ago. The gross sales for 148 sold was Can$4,803,500. The number of not sold was 71, down from 79 last year when 128 were listed as sold.
Topping the two-day select session was a racy colt by hot young sire War Front , a son of Danzig, out of the Seattle Slew mare Terrigal. The dark bay, sold by Richard Hogan, agent for breeders Punch and Anne Kent of Hope Stock Farm in Ontario, was bought for Can$140,000 by William and Anne Scott. The colt is a half brother to stakes-placed Niagara Thunder.

WOODBINE WEDNESDAY
DULCE ESPERANZA won the featured races of the night for owner/breeder Steve Owens. The Survivalist filly, ridden for the first time by Emma-Jayne Wilson, powered past the leaders late to win for the 3rd time in her 6th race. She was turning back to 1 1/16 miles from 1 1/8 miles.
The finale was a maiden allowance for older mares won by the Sorokolity family’s STORMY ALLURE who won very easily on the pace in her 2nd career start. She is by Stormy Atlantic and was the 9th winner for trainer Darwin Banach.
Expensive yearling POWERMAN is the latest winner for owner John Oxley and trainer Mark Casse as he won the lone grass race of the night, a maiden $50K claiming event. Quincey Welch rode the son of Lemon Drop Kid.
Trainer TERRY JORDAN is now 50% during the last 2 years with debut winners from starters. The trainer sent out his 8th such winner form his last 16 straters last night – BWANA BE GONE (Bwana Charlie) won his debut from the rail post despite a very sluggish beginning and being rushed up the rail.
KELYNACK RACING STABLE and STEVEN DUFFIELD were busy at the yearling sale and win their 3rd race together at Woodbine with LOVELY LO, a Scat Saddy 2yo filly who won race 2 for $25,000 on the pace.
Trip handicappers were all over GENTLEMAN JACKSON last night in race 4. The Alert 4yo gelding, originally a $12,500 claim, had a troubled journey in his latest for $25,000 and was down to $16,000 last night for trainer Scott Fairlie and his Ace Racing Stable. The gelding paid a whopping $17.00.
UN STABLE and trainer Lorna Perkins, also busy at the yearling sale on Monday and Tuesday with a couple of big purchases, won the 5th race with CLEVER PEAKS, a filly equipped with ear muffs, who was making her first start since December. The 4yo by Peaks and Valleys is a homebred who was placed 6 times in 7 races last year at the maiden allowance class and she was dropping to $25,000 last night.
CALM NIGHT won race 6 for trainer Alex Bankuti and owner Larry Deakins. The Black Mambo 6yo barged his way 3 wide around the last turn to winfor $11,500 and it was his first win of the season. It was his 2nd win in 31 races.
SQUARE EDDIE BACK IN ACTION
Like a broken record, Thoroughblog reports that Canadian bred SQUARE EDDIE is racing again – he was 7th yesterday in the Pirate’s Bounty Stakes on closing day at Del Mar. The horse, a 6yo who has been retired twice, has made $37,000 in his last 6 races.

Puss N Boots remembered
One of the most popular traditions at Fort Erie Race Track continued today as Francine Villeneuve took a jump into the infield pond after winning the Puss N Boots Cup. The race had been originally scheduled to run on the turf course but after heavy rain over the past two days the event was moved to the main dirt track which was listed as good. A field of 12 colts and geldings ran a distance of 1 1/16th miles for a purse of $30,000.
For the second year in a row the grey gelding known as Kettle Rapids took the race on a front end mission. Myckie Neubauer trains the 7-year-old son of Mizzen Mast for RMC Stable.
In his four starts prior to the Puss N Boots Cup the grey’s best result to date had been a fourth place finish on July 17th when racing on the turf. His last win took place a year ago today when he took the Puss N Boots under jockey Krista Carignan.
“We have been unlucky with the track’s surface. His last two races were in the mud and he wasn’t comfortable racing on it,” explained Neubauer. “Today he loved the surface and won!”
Kettle Rapids took the early lead straight from the gate setting an opening quarter of 24.4. Nearing the half mile mark he was challenged by Pure Rey ridden by Bradley Wilson. Wilson and his colt actually grabbed a short lead but it didn’t last long as Kettle Rapids and Francine Villeneuve dug in gamely. The two came down the stretch together but the grey proved to be much the best pulling away to win by four lengths.
“He was awesome today. He took control from start to finish,” said Villeneuve. “We were pressured by the other horse but I knew we wouldn’t be beat.”
