IT’S GETTING CLOSE TO YEARLING TIME! Who is in the mood to buy a horse? Everyone is at this time of year and on Monday, locals got a taste of the action at the Hill ‘n’ Dale Open House and yearling show in Aurora,. Ontario. Thirteen yearlings were shown yesterday at the famed farm. There are a total of 224 in the select session of the Canadian Premier Yearling sale on Sept. 3 and 111 in the open session on Sept. 7.
PUDZ is the Hill n Dale mascot and greeter. He took a look at the catalogue.
A chestnut colt by Strut the Stage out of Stormin Wife is a half brother to double stakes placed 2yo Paladin Bay. This colt was bred by Ericka Rusnak who showed the yearlings.
The brilliant ESKENDEREYA, 4 for 6, Wood Memorial etc., is the sire of this grand colt out of stakes winner Singit by Sultry Song.
The only MARCAVELLY in the select session is this lovely guy out of El Tara, the dam of maiden allowance runner Impetutous Act, who recently ran a 9 on the Ragozin Sheets (C) and could win his maiden tomorrow.
UP UP, AND AWAY!
It took a bit of work but UP WITH THE BIRDS won the $500,000 Breeders’ Stakes as expected, coming in off his narrow, unlucky loss in the Queen’s Plate on July 7.
Sam-Son Farms’ homebred colt posted an 87 Beyer in the 1 1/2 mile turf race, perhaps not overly comfortable with the distance but simply better than his rivals on the day.
PYRITE MOUNTAIN had a dreadful trip throughout the 1 1/2 miles on grass, steadying and in traffic for most of the race. He could have been 2nd rather than 3rd. RIVER SEVEN ran 2nd for the Tucci Stable, who won the Plate and watched River Seven finished 2nd in the Prince of Wales.
Trainer Malcolm Pierce said the Stormy Atlantic colt will be pointed to races later this fall, perhaps in the U.S.
He has won $847,069 and was one of two major stakes winner on Sunday at Woodbine for the track’s favourite guy, EURICO ROSA DA SILVA.

96 Beyer for 70 turf star
Following in the hoofprints of SPICE ROUTE, MUSKETIER and so may more, FROTE DEI MARMI is trainer Roger Attfield’s latest older graded SW. The 7yo bay by Selkirk has rebounded from a drab winter to win two straight graded stakes at his home course of Woodbine including Sunday’s Sky Classic Stakes. Stella Perdomo’s guy won this race last year also when in a Sovereign nominated season.
FORTE DEI MARMI set a course record too, 1 1/4 miles on turf in 2:00.12.
The gelding will continue on the Woodbine turf series including the Northern Dancer and Canadian International. Certainly a win in both of those, or the latter, stamps this guy a serious Horse of the Year candidate….but scroll down to see some major competition for that title from out west!

STRELA, bred by Andrew Fredericks, won her maiden in race 3, a 2yo filly, 5 furlong dash. She beat favoured Ring for Rosy by 1/2 a length and GaryBoulanger rode her. She is by Mobil out of Astrotime by Gilded Time.
Barry Holmes’ B.C. bred GOLDSTRKLE GLORY won the 4th race, a turf allowance at 6 furlongs by more than 5 lengths. The daughter of Second in Command is a former Terry Jordan trainee now in the care of Kelly Callaghan. The filly ran an 88 Beyer Figure .
FILL YER BOOTS filled the pockets of Mike Ambler, greg Lang and Rick Pettifer as the Bold Executive gelding won his maiden for $25,000 claiming from post 14. The Hope Stock Farm-bred won by 4 lengths with a 58 Beyer. He has a full brother in the yearling next next month, hip 28, and this is the family of You Don’t Pass and Double Malt.
REEL GOOD MOVIE stretched out well to 1 1/16 miles and won her maiden at the allowance level for John Pastorek and trainer John Simms. The Silent Name filly is out of Feel Good Movie by Yes’ It’s True and she was bred by the owner.
KING CITY was a trip handicapper’s play in race 7 when he stalked a mad pace duel between Olivier and favoured Click and powered on for the win for Goldmart Farms and trainer Sid Attard. The Where’s the Ring 4yo has a half sibling in the Canadian Premier yearling sale next month, hip 296 by Old Forester.
Longtime Woodbine trainer CONRAD BELAIRE won his 369th race since 1977 when DOUBLE DOUBLE upset the last race at 40 to 1, his first race of the year. The win by the Florida bred ruined most Pick 4 tickets as the gelding reeled in almost everyone’s pick, Bilby Rhode. See Conrad Belaire’s long training record at the end of this post.
SAY WHAT??
Gus Schickedan’zs SAY NO MORE ran a huge race at Saratoga on Saturday when he snuck down for a 7 furlong dirt allowance. The son of Langfuhr – Silent Course, by Trajectory led all the way and just missed by a nose, earning a career best 100 BEYER FIGURE.
He has a three-quarter sister in the yearling sale next month, hip 27, by Mobil.
HERBIE D. POSTS 100 BEYER IN LONGACRES MILE WIN
Canadian bred soars to top of older horse ranks
HERBIE D., bred in British Columbia by George Robbins, led all the way and won the Longacres Mile on Sunday at Emerald Downs, posting a 100 Beyer Speed Figure. He ran 1 mile in 1:35. The son of Orchid’s Devil – Chili Chines, by Katowice is owned by Robbins and Darcia Doman, a relative of the late Herb Doman, for whom the gelding is named.
HERBIE D was a BC champion 2yo and he has won 7 of his last 8 races and 10 of 13. He tore a suspensory at 2 and had a 9 month layoff and surgery and he has come back as good as new. He ir trained by Robert Gilker and is from the family of Doman’s BC champion mare RIGHT CHILLY.
Right Chilly is the dam of Verinda D., who produced Chilio Chines, the dam of Herbie D.

TRADE STORM headed to Woodbine Mile

Trade Storm will be off on his travels after he contests the Group 2, £100,000 Celebration Mile at Goodwood August 24.
The five-year-old has been holding his own in Group 1 company this season and was last seen finishing a respectable fourth behind Toronado in the brilliant renewal of the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood on July 31.
David Simcock’s charge posted two promising efforts at Ascot, coming home a close fourth under a penalty in the Summer Mile in July and finishing fifth in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot in June.
