WEDNESDAY AT WOODBINE and the snow was falling!
It was a winter wonderland at Woodbine last night, a mighty cold too, but there was plenty of racing action with some very brave grooms and riders.
There were some very cool ‘firsts’ on the night too.
Local stallion JIGGS COZ, winner of the Plate Trial Stakes, sired his first winner when BIRCH CIRCUIT won the first race for owner/breeder John Unger. Barb Minshall trains the 2yo filly who is out of Bold Courant by Bold n Flashy. It was her 7th career race.
BEAR’S GOOD MEN won race 2, a $25,000 maiden 3yo and up claiming race. This gorgeous son of Philanthropist cost $125000 as a yearling. He won his opener with a late re-bid on the rail in a snowstorm. Reade Baker trains for the Bear Stables and Jim McAleney rode.
STAR OF THE FOREST won race 3 as she rallied wide just before the quarter-pole and took her maiden in her 10th career race. She is an Old Forester filly bred by Alain Mainprize and owned by Un Stable. Lorna Perkins trains and David Garcia rode.
That race also featured the first ride for JENNA BRAY, a worker of all trades over at Carolyn Costigan’s farm. She rode George Strawbridge’s Silent Spy to a third place finish and did not carry a whip.
“I grew up on a hobby farm in Burlington Ontario with my four siblings. I have been passionate about horses since I could walk and have been working with them ever since,” Bray told Thoroughblog.
Roger Laurin, son of Lucian, won his 4th race of the meeting when CHAMPAGNE MOOD won the 4th for maiden 3yos and up, claiming $12,500, She is a Concerto homebred and was the first of 2 winners for apprentice Skye Chernetz.
In that race, PROXY LADY stumbled at the start and then propped or popped, sending jockey Juan Crawford into the air doing a cartwheel with a half twist. Crawford seemed to be okay and was back to ride the rest of the card.
Race 5 0 more McAleney as SOLO PLAYER tumbled to the bottom claiming level for the first time off a 10th place finish and suddenly won, his 2nd win of the campaign. He is a John Cardella owned and trained 4yo.
Race 6 – not easy to figure unless you play trainer Scott Fairlie off the claim. DON’T THINK TWICE won on the lead for $11,00 claiming after he was blow out for $6,000 in his last race. He needs the lead to do well in route races it seems and that is what happened. Sheena Ryan rode the 6yo by A Fleets Dancer.
Race 7 – Jockey Ryan and HELIO BIRD probably should have won this race for $10,000 claiming but they were delayed in traffic until it was too late. It would have been trained Laurie Silvera’s 100th career winner.
Race 8, the feature, went to Debbie England’s cool guy REGAL WARNING, a son of Weather Warning, who came from the (dark) clouds and won the 7 furlong allowance with a night-high 75 Beyer Figure.
The carryover for the High 5 for Friday is $59,000. A total of $1.8 million was bet on Woodbine last night.
