WEDNESDAY NIGHT AT WOOD
Windy, slow and outside
Outsider ralliers dominated racing last night at Woodbine as a strong headwind hitting horses in the face inthe stretch led to slow times in route races and fast fractions early in sprints.
KISSHER TO KEEPER (Where’s the Ring) won her 2nd straight race in a non-winners of 3 for $11,500 for Osprey Stable and trainer Scott Fairlie, She received a super off the pace trip from Patrick Husbands.
For the 3rd conseucitve WEDNESDAY NIGHT, races were off the grass and race 2 went to Nick Nosowenko’s BLACK BIKINI and Emma-Jayne Wilson. She’s not the easiets mare to figure out but she won the allowance event for non-winners of 3 with a wide, off the pace run.
Race 3, maidens that wanted grass, went to DYNAMIC ROYAL, a QUEEN’S PLATE ELIGIBLE, who ran an 81 Beyer Figure is maiden score last night. Owned and bred by Ivan Dalos, the Chapel Royal colt was making his 3rd career start.
Race 4 went to KALUA ON THE ROCKS (Horse Chestnut) who won for the 2nd straight time for Mike Kowalski and trainer Sam DiPasquale. The mare was winning for $20,000 claiming.
Bombs away in race 5 as VINDYS LUCKYSTRIKE became the first winner for the Mike Mattine barn as she won for $16,000 in her 2nd career stARt. The Vindication filly was just a $4,600 yearling purchase. She beat 42 to 1 shot DREAM CRUSADER and 78 to 1 shot JOVI BEGONE ($52K triactor payoff was actually a 20 cent winning ticket) and 14 to shot OUTOFRETIREMENT was fourth to key a $13K superfecta.
Race 6 3was tough to figure – BERNARD TERRACE is usually a speed horse who rallied wide last night to beat horses that have been troubncing him all season; The Alke 3yo is owned by Goldie, Discovery and Weila Ye and trained by Julia Carey.
Trainer MARTIN DREXLER won his first race of the season when STEP ON UP somehow rallied up the rail over a surface that actually seemed to be getting faster (or the winds were dying down) to win race 7. The Gilded Time, Ontario bred raced 6 furlongs for $37,500 in 1:10.
In the finale, 4to 1 shot BEAR KIRIDASHI KID, from the Bear Stables and Reade Baker, won with a weird trip as he was pressing, dropped back and then came on again, to take the maiden event for $11,500. The Alberta homebred sparked a $30,000 superfecta payoff and moved the PICK 6 POOL for $19,000 – let the carryovers begin!

TRIAL RESULT MAKES ARTIC FERN/HOTEP the faves
The top three favourites for the Plate, when the public is done with them, should be ARTIC FERN, HOTEP and MOBILIZER as fans will likely pass on Big Red Mike because of the slow pace in the Trial win.
Fillies will play a big role with ROAN INISH and EMBUR’S SONG expected to start – we await a decision on MOMENT OF MAJESTY, who would have to be supplemented for $25,000.

Dennis is best known for helping to organize large events in Toronto. These include World Youth Day in 2002 that brought Pope John Paul II to Toronto, and the post-SARS Rolling Stones concert in 2003 which attracted over 450,000 people and helped revive tourism in the city. In 1989, Mills organized the Summit on the Environment in Toronto, which attracted approximately 50,000 people and performers such as John Denver and Gordon Lightfoot. In 2001, with the Assembly of First Nations, Mills organized and co-chaired the Bala Summit on Water, attended by leading experts from Canada and the United States. Starting in 1999, Mills initiated and continues to organize events for the Family Farm Tribute to recognize the contributions of Canadian family farms.

LINE OF DEPARTURE WINNER
Line of Departure, by A.P. Indy- Ballerina Princess and a half brother to graded SW Pico Teneriffe, came through with his first winner when his son Molinaro Handsome scored by 5 3/4 lengths at Woodbine second time out June 13. A homebred for Molinaro Stables, Molinaro Handsome won the 4 1/2-furlong race in :52.11.

The fast-growing industry of QUARTER HORSE racing and breeding in Ontario is now available to bet on from Woodbine and teletheatres. The Tuesday cards of racing, post time 2:30, feature 10 races and full fields and lots of interesting storylines with its horsepeople who have stuck byt the business since before the slost came to the Oshawa, Ontario track.
Now, Woodbine carries the signal and the handle went up Tuesday to $60,000 plus, it usually is around $14,000 a day.
What should be the next move now is to get AJAX on Tuesdays on HPI TV and see what kind of help Woodbine can give this industry, which is on the move.
Hopefully HPI wil show the quarter horses races next week – it’s Canadian after all.

Thanks to a group of horse-loving volunteers, some of your favourite former race horses are now spending their retirement years living the good life.
New Stride Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation was organized in 2002 as a way to find homes for horses no longer able to race.
And in what began as a grassroots operation looking after a few former race horses, New Stride is now one of the premier adoption agencies for former race horses in Canada.
Among familiar names New Stride has found homes for: Barbex, I’m a Smarty, Rampaging Alf, Sam’s Empire and Ryson.

RECENT HASTINGS STAKES WINNERS
CONCERT MUSIC (Concerto – So Classy)
Vancouver, B.C. (June 12/10) — Calling her “the top sprinter in the Northwest”, co-owner Ross McLeod was beaming from the winner’s circle as he watched Concert Music storm to a fifth consecutive victory at Hastings Racecourse Saturday afternoon.
Owned by McLeod and Rob Fiorvento, Concert Music won the $50,000 Senate Appointee for fillies and mares with jockey Fernando Perez in cruise control, finishing one and three quarters lengths ahead of Kaweah Princess. Final time over the 6 ½ furlongs was 1:16.92.
Concert Music gained the lead at the quarter pole after stalking Emerald Downs invader Clair Annette. Trained by John Snow, Concert Music increased her career earnings to $96,720. She was purchased as a yearling three years ago in Florida for $12,000.
ALMOST TIME
(Finality – Vainglorious, bred in BC)
In a race that super star Teide was expected to win, stablemate Almost Time stole the limelight with a convincing victory in the $50,000 John Longden 6000 Sunday afternoon at Hastings Racecourse.
With jockey Frank Fuentes in the irons, Almost Time trailed for the first three quarters but gained the lead at mid stretch and won by two-and-a-quarter lengths in a time of 1:42.93 over a mile and one-sixteenth.
He earned a 97 Beyer Figure.
Almost Time paid a handsome $16.20 with odds-on favourite Teide paying $4.10 for second.
Almost Time and Teide are owned by Swift Thoroughbreds Inc. and trained by Dino Condilenios.
Teide and Tommy Danzigger engaged in an early head-to-head duel, creating the opportunity for Almost Time to finish just shy of the Hastings record of 1:42.20.
