NORTHERN DANCER PAVILLION: landmark building at CFC will house multi-discipline programs
WOODBINE ENTERTAINMENT GROUP’S leader NICK EAVES talks with PREMIER KATHLEEN WYNNE at the old Windfields.CFC on Wednesday.

Walking through the property of the Canadian Film Centre on Bayview Avenue in Toronto one can almost feel the presence of champions.
The CFC occupies the Bayview Ave. Windfields Farm, where E.P. Taylor lived with his wife Winnie and where horses frolicked and ran through paddocks.
Originally owned by Colonel Sam McLughlin and called Parkwood Stable, Taylor bought it and called it The National Stud. It was where he began the most famous breeding operation in horse racing.
Taylor moved his farm to Oshawa and up on the passing of E.P. Taylor, son Charles Taylor donated the 6-square kilometer property to filmmaker Norman Jewison (The Thomas Crown Affair, Moonstruck, The Hurricane, etc.) when Jewison sought a centre in Torono much like the American Film Institute.
Charles Taylor and family agreed and in 1988 Windfields Farm opened as the CFC.
While the Taylors had guests such as Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the CFC has also had its own dignitaries on its property.
When you walk through the main house, you see dozens of signed pictures from movie stars and movie makers such as Michael Douglas, Miartin Scorcese, Whoopi Goldberg, Clint Eastwood and more. Many of these pictures on the walls have the celebrity’s name following by “at Windfields”. Very cool.
Yesterday’s groundbreaking event was a packed affair with numerous powerful folks. Among them, the Honourable Lisa Raitt, the Minister of Labour and Member of Parliament for Halton.
It was PREMIER WYNNE who grabbed the attention of the horse racing people in attendance, however.
“I think I was 10 when he started to race,’ said Wynne in her speech. “And, as you know, I have been talking about horse racing a lot these days.”
Wynne went on to say how appropriate it was that the new CFC building was named after a horse racing champion runner and sire who world class.
Premier Wynne seems to be dedicated to getting horse racing in Ontario back on track after the previous Liberal government, in conjuntion with the OLG’s Paul Godfrey, decided to almost wipe it out completely when it ended the slots-at-racetracks programs.
The Premier has mentioned her dissatisfaction with the OLG and when she voluntarily talks about horse racing, it’s very encouraging.

NORTHERN DANCER WINS THE PREAKNESS!!
ORB DRAWS THE RAIL IN 9 HORSE PREAKNESS
By Chris Korman The Baltimore Sun
8:50 p.m. EDT, May 15, 2013
A few low, indecipherable noises escaped from the table where Shug McGaughey, trainer of even-money Preakness favorite Orb, sat during the post-position draw Wednesday.
The horse had drawn the dreaded No. 1 gate, meaning eight horses will be closing him in as they race toward the shortest path to the first turn.
McGaughey, though, was not among those who thought this meant anything significant.
“Some people groaned,” he said. “I didn’t groan.”
