Wednesday’s Canadian Millions Sales Stakes Day program at Woodbine was highlighted by a pair of scores for owner-trainer John Ross and a hat trick for jockey Eurico Rosa da Silva.
The revamped Yearling Sales Stakes Day, restricted to horses entered in past local Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (CTHS) Yearling Sales, featured six stakes worth $900,000 in total.
Among the day’s notable results, Ross watched as da Silva guided impressive juvenile Go Greeley to a dramatic nose score to notch his third consecutive stakes win, taking the $200,000 Simcoe Stakes. The talented colt already boasted wins in the Colin and Vandal Stakes.
Earlier on the card, Ross combined with Gary Boulanger to win the $200,000 Muskoka Stakes, by disqualification, after battling with race winner On Rainbow Bridge the length of the stretch in the 6 1/2-furlong ‘Poly’ stake.
Welloiledmachine, a five-year-old son of champion Mobil, who won the Halton in 2003, 2004 and 2005, successfully defended his own Halton title covering one mile over a ‘yielding’ E.P. Taylor Turf Course in the 22nd running of the event, in 1:37.51, winning by 2 ¾ lengths.
Da Silva, who also scored with Bear No Joke in the $125,000 Kenora Stakes, completed his hat trick with a front-running score aboard Logan’s Peak in the $125,000 Algoma Stakes.
Four different jockeys won a stake: Eurico Rosa da Silva (Kenora, Simcoe and Algoma), Jim McAleney (Halton), Luis Contreras (Elgin) and Gary Boulanger (Muskoka).
Aside from Ross, Mike Keogh (Halton), Reade Baker (Kenora), Roger Attfield (Elgin) and Nick Gonzalez (Algoma) were the other trainers to make a trip to the winner’s circle.
