The American Quarter Horse racing world was rocked in recent weeks by the uncovering of an illicit drug, Carmoterol, in post-race tests of some 12 horses that competed on the All American racing day in September at Ruidoso Downs in Albequerque, New Mexico. Two prominent trainers, Toby Keeton and Heath Taylor, have been suspended indefinitely, and 12 horses, including Hezgotthelook Z, winner of the $3 million All American Futurity, have been disqualified from purse money.
Canada’s pari-mutuel wagering regulator, the Canadian Pari Mutuel Agency (CPMA), which tests horses before and/or after races through its Drug Control Program, expects to be testing for Carmoterol by the outset of the 2025 Woodbine Thoroughbred season, set to begin April 2.
“The CPMA has been in contact with one of the U.S. labs involved in the testing for carmoterol and an exchange of methodology is taking place,” said a media spokesperson in an email to Canadian Thoroughbred.
Carmoterol is a beta agonist that was experimentally tested as a bronchodilator in 2010 but ultimately not approved for human use in the United States.
A beta agonist such as Clenbuterol (a beta-2 agonist) are bronchodilators that are sometimes used in racehorses to treat breathing problems. However, they also have a steroidal effect, altering a horse’s muscle mass, and that is illegal in horse racing. Clenbuterol was banned in Quarter Horse Racing in 2015. It is still an allowable treatment in Thoroughbred racing, but it has a 28-day elimination guideline.
Another bronchodilator, Salbutamol or Albuterol, is a short-term medication that has a 24-hour withdrawal guideline.
The CPMA said in its email, “A reference standard of the substance has been purchased and the CPMA testing laboratory in Ottawa is in the process of including carmoterol to the list of prohibited substances that samples are tested for.
“The CPMA expects the test for carmoterol to be up and running for the start of racing season in April.”
