Aidan O’Brien became the first trainer in the history of the iconic Epsom Derby to win the classic three years in succession last year. This year he has four entrants as he bids for another success in the 1 1/2 mile race for three-year-olds, set for tomorrow (late morning, EST).
Trainer William Haggis has George Waud’s MALTESE CROSS (Sea the Stars (GB)) in the Derby, seeking his second win in the race since 1996 when he won it with Shaamit. Waud, a Hollywood producer, has been reveling in the pre-Derby press. He said to Racing TV, “The thing I can say about Samuel L. Jackson is he was a one-take wonder. He always showed up prepared, he always nailed his line in one take and, so far, Maltese Cross has been a bit of a one-take wonder.
“He’s always sort of just done enough to do what he needs to do, but he’s improved with every race. I think, most significantly, he really impressed Tom Marquand at Lingfield, and in the work he’s done since then. But, look, it wouldn’t be the Derby if it wasn’t hard.”
