Nine Ontario-bred two-year-olds sold for a combined $852,000, averaging $94,666, at this week’s OBS June Two-Year-Olds and Horses of Racing Age Sale at the OBS Sales Grounds in Ocala, Florida.
The Ontario-bred group was led by Hip #827, a Medaglia d’Oro colt out of Season Ticket, who sold for $400,000 to Len and Jon Green’s D. J. Stable LLC during the final session of the three-day auction. Fittingly, the colt’s name is Canada.
D. J. Stable races frequently at Woodbine, where its horses are trained by Mark Casse. Canada worked two furlongs in 21.20 during the under tack show and proved to be a significant pinhooking success, having been purchased by 30-30 Ranch for just $25,000 at last year’s Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
Canada is out of Season Ticket, a Lemon Drop Kid mare who won the Wonder Where Stakes and finished third in the Woodbine Oaks. Season Ticket is also a full sister to Breeders’ Stakes winner Belichick. She was purchased by Rosegrove Farm and John Ropes in 2021 while in foal to Frosted. The colt was bred by Godolphin and John Ropes.
Three of the nine Ontario-bred horses sold were also Ontario-sired. Hip #151, a Souper Speedy filly out of Bright Lights Up, bred by Borders Racing Stable Ltd., sold for $50,000 to Taproot Bloodstock, agent for Catherine Day Phillips. Hip #723, a Point of Entry colt out of Oxhilirating, bred by Godolphin and John Ropes, also brought $50,000 from Taproot Bloodstock, agent for Phillips, while Hip #772, a Frac Daddy colt out of Ravenist, bred by Michael Byrne, sold privately for $20,000 to Hidden Brook, agent.
Other Ontario-breds sold included:
Hip #81, a Charlatan filly out of Atlantic Voyage, bred by Hill ‘N’ Dale Equine Holdings, sold for $120,000 to MyRacehorse.com and Stamatis Stables LLC.
Hip #297, a Girvin filly out of Evening Wind, bred by Tara Horse Farm Inc., sold privately for $100,000 to Fahad Aloraini.
Hip #408, a Bolt d’Oro filly out of Golden Coast, bred by Ballycroy Bloodstock, sold for $110,000 to Joseph Klausa.
Hip #622, a Maclean’s Music filly out of Moonlit Promise, bred by Hill ‘N’ Dale Equine Holdings Inc., Kotpil Inc. and Windsor Boys, sold for $120,000 to RB Bloodstock, agent for Jacmac Stable LLC.
Hip #953, an Independence Hall colt out of Tiptoe, bred by Apricot Valley Thoroughbreds, sold for $2,000 to Phil Hall.
The overall sale produced records for gross receipts of $28,551,500 and an average price of $50,894. Ontario-breds performed especially well, averaging more than double the sale average.
