The famous MELBOURNE CUP at Flemington racecourse in Australia will go later tonight (Tuesday in Australia) and Canadian racing fans can watch and wager at HPIBet.com.

There will not be any fans at the Cup, the race that “stops a nation.”

The 2 mile classic has a field of 24 and early favourite TIGER MOTH (Galileo – Lesson in Humility by Mujadil) drew a tough post, 23. His trainer Aidan O’Brien has yet to win the Cup.

From abc.net.au:  The Caulfield Cup winner, Verry Elleegant, drew barrier 15, which will make things harder for the Chris Waller-trained chance.

Sir Dragonet, who won this year’s Cox Plate, was given barrier 14 and Russian Camelot — who finished third in the same race — will go from 16.

Among those to benefit from the draw were English stayer Anthony Van Dyck — the English Derby winner and Caulfield Cup runner-up also trained by O’Brien — received barrier three, Finche will go from six and the Paul Preusker-trained Surprise Baby has barrier seven.

“He has run really well [this preparation],” Finche’s jockey James McDonald told Channel Ten.

“Now he’s got a good gate and there are no excuses.”

Last year’s winner, Vow and Declare, drew barrier four, but the Danny O’Brien-trained galloper is carrying 57 kg — five kilograms more than in 2019— and is seen as something of an outsider in Cup betting at $34.

Prince of Arran, who came second in last year’s race and third behind Cross Counter in 2018, drew the inside barrier one.

From The Australian:

Kerrin McEvoy is approaching a historic Melbourne Cup without a set plan on race favourite Tiger Moth as he seeks to equal the record as the race’s most successful jockey.

The three-time Melbourne Cup winning jockey, who has ridden Brew, Almandin and Cross Counter to successes, will assess the early pace before deciding where to place his Irish hopeful.

The 40-year-old is seeking to give champion Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien, who will also start top-weight Anthony Van Dyck, his first Melbourne Cup winner with the lightly-raced stayer.

McEvoy, who steered Brew to success in 2000 from the same barrier of 23 that Tiger Moth will jump from, admits he would have preferred not to have drawn so widely on what is shaping as a warm Melbourne Cup day.
