Kentucky-bred MONY MONY, owned by Scott and Devan Dilworth (of champion Are You Kidding Me fame) and Randy Andrews, invaded Woodbine and came away with top money from the $125,000 purse of the Star Shoot Stakes at Woodbine on April 25. Trained by Joe Sharp, the Munnings filly and jockey Sofia Vives wound up the narrow favourite in the field of seven sprinting 6 furlongs.
For the first stakes race of the season, the Star Shoot drew a nice field of fillies including two supplements (Mony Mony and Day to Day) plus Mike Repole’s well-bred Nonna’s Love, a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Fierceness.
Mony Mony was eager from the start and pulled Vives to a dueling position from her 2 post position. The filly, who had won two straight races before fading in the Serena’s Song Stakes at Turfway Park in late March, soon grabbed a short lead while Day to Day chased and the maiden Lakota Lady moved up along the inside. Mony Mony held firm to hold off Lakota Lady for the win while Day to Day ended up a distant third. The finishing time was 1:11.02.
Repole’s Nonna’s Love, who did not warm up well, was eased across the finish line.
Mony Mony is out of the Super Saver mare Super Sharp, a five-time winning half-sister to Cigar Mile (G1) winner Sharp Azteca ($2.4 million in earnings). Mony Mony is a half-sister to two other winners.
Saturday at Woodbine was rainy, but a good day for trainers such as GORD COLBOURNE, who won race 1 with DEVIL’S TONGUE, owned by Sherrie Martin and Ruth Nelson and SYLVAIN PION, who watched the almost-white mare MARDENE stroll to a big win in the finale under jockey Juan Crawford.
Upland Flats and Jeff and Annabel Begg’s PAGEANT QUEEN, a CTHS sales purchase in 2024, began her three-year-old campaign with a fine, last-to-first win in a 6-furlong allowance. Racing with blinkers off, the Point of Entry – Queen Ofthe Dawn by Sun King filly and Rafael Hernandez defeated stablemate Sipping History. Both fillies are trained by Jamie Begg.
Pageant Queen, who was stakes-placed four straight times after her debut win last season, was bred by Leslie and Tony Russo.
